Gender Norms, Domestic Violence and Women's Vulnerability to HIV/AIDS

This 108-page research publication; Gender Norms, Domestic Violence and women’s Vulnerability to HIV/AIDS was published 2009 and authored by Ms Betty Akumatey and Ms Akosua Darkwa both Sociologists and lecturers at the Sociology Department of the University of Ghana, Legon.

The book reveals the underlying socio-cultural reasons for women’s vulnerability to HIV infection. At the time of the study, more women than men were infected by HIV. The study findings clearly established a link between violence and gender norms to women’s infection rate. It further demonstrates that in a socio-cultural context where women do not have the same power as men with regard to sexuality, the ABC strategy cannot be very effective in preventing HIV transmission.

The study falls under the Gender Centre’s Nkyinkyim anti-violence project which is a joint initiative with its partners; Amasachina Self Help Association, GAWU, BEWDA and CEDEP.

It is the expectation of the authors and publishers of this study that it would be used to develop programmes to address some of the key challenges, that face women and girls within the context of HIV transmission and gender based violence.
