AIDS was first recognized in 1981 in the United States of America as a new disease of unknown origin. Subsequent investigation revealed the causative virus which was later identified by a group of scientists. This disease was found to be transmitted by a virus which is known as Human Immuno-deficiency Virus (HIV). HIV infection has been re[ported to WHO from all the countries of the world.
