Women Initiative for Development & Environmental Protection
Women Initiative for Development and Environmental Protection (WIDEP), formerly known as Environment and Development Action Plan for Women (EDAPW) is a non Governmental Organization (NGO) which was established to address the gnawing problems of the environment, rural development and poverty at the grass roots.
WIDEP is aware of, and concerned with environmental issues, especially environmental degradation and pollution as well as poverty and hunger arising from inequalities and ignorance.
The world, in the 21st century, sees the need to bridge the inequality gap as a necessary requirement for attaining true development. The threat that non-replenished resources exploitation poses for mankind is also a great concern to humanity. Hence the definition of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to include the promotion of gender equality/empowerment of women, and environmental sustainability as its 3rd and 7th Agenda respectively.
As it is in most parts of the developing world, so it is also in Nigeria where about 80% of the population live below the poverty line. Desertification competes for up to one-third of the arable land. There is therefore the need for a Non Governmental Organisation to address these specific issues in order to complement government’s efforts at reducing poverty, achieving the 3rd and the 7th agenda of the MDGs and sustainable development.
